Ford's Electric Vehicles to Support Tesla's Charging Standard in North America

In a move to cater to their North American customer base, Ford announced their integration of Tesla’s NACS charging standard into their next generation of electric vehicles starting from 2025. This decision was made in response to the growing issues related to the positioning of the charging connector, leading to challenges with the short cable of Tesla’s V3 Superchargers, similar to the occurrences in Europe.

Less than a year after the announcement, Ford’s Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning electric vehicle owners have begun utilizing Tesla’s Supercharger stations for their initial recharges. Through a software update, Ford has fulfilled their promise by providing a charging experience nearly identical to that of Tesla owners at these Superchargers.

For those looking to utilize Tesla’s Superchargers with a Ford electric vehicle in North America, the first step is to acquire the necessary adapter. Ford will be offering this adapter free of charge until July 1st, after which it will be available for purchase at $230. Once obtained, a simple software update for the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning will enable a seamless charging experience, eliminating the need for credit cards, NFC key fobs, or the Tesla app. The Plug&Charge functionality of Tesla’s Superchargers automatically charges the cost of recharges to the user’s FordPass-configured account.

Additionally, the FordPass app allows users to locate nearby Superchargers and those available along their route, displaying the price per kWh at each location. Furthermore, an upcoming update for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will enable route planning that incorporates the availability of Superchargers.

With Ford taking the lead in supporting Tesla’s charging standard, it is anticipated that other manufacturers, such as General Motors, will follow suit in the coming months after also expressing their backing for the NACS standard.
