Freese graduated from Senatobia High School in 1988 and went to Northwest Mississippi Community College, where he lettered in junior college baseball for two years. In the spring of 1990, he was named an NJCAA Academic All-American for the Rangers. Freese went on to play baseball at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he tried out for the team in the fall of 1990, hoping to make the roster for the spring of 1991. He was dismissed from the team.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and a minor in coaching and sports administration from Southern Miss in 1992. In 1992, Freese became the offensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Briarcrest Christian School in Memphis, Tennessee.
Freeze was hired in 2005 as an assistant athletic director for football external affairs at the University of Mississippi. He was named tight ends coach and hired coordinator the following season, a position he held until 2007. Head coach Ed Orgeron until the hiring of Houston Nutt.
