Margot Robbie reveals she didn’t audition but cast herself as Barbie

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie leaves fans thrilled. Despite competition from Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, the film achieves remarkable box office success. Margot Robbie reveals she didn’t audition but cast herself as Barbie since she was already a producer. Playfully, she said, “I guess I cast myself.”

In an interview with Teen Vogue, she shared that she didn’t have to audition for the role as she was already on board as a producer. Margot playfully quipped, “I guess I cast myself.”

She said, “Greta being our writer and director, she was always who I wanted to make a Barbie movie with. I said to her, ‘Yes, I’ll come on board. I don’t have to be in the movie. You know I’m very passionate about making this as a producer, but I don’t have to play Barbie or be in the movie in any capacity. I’m happy just to produce,’ and she was like, ‘No, I really wanna write this for you.’ And she wrote me an amazing part.” Shedding more light on the casting process, Margot Robbie shared how she had envisioned Ryan Gosling as the perfect counterpart to her stereotypical Barbie. “It always said in the script, ‘Barbie, Margot and Ken, Ryan Gosling.’ So, we manifested that into existence as well and just pretty much wouldn’t take no for an answer,” she said.

Despite tough competition from Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, the Barbie movie has achieved remarkable success at the box office. Margot Robbie, who plays the lead role, revealed an interesting detail about her involvement in the project. In an interview with Teen Vogue, she shared that she didn’t need to audition for the role because she was already on board as a producer. She jokingly added, “I guess I cast myself.”

Margot expressed that she always wanted Greta to be the writer and director for the Barbie movie. Initially, she told Greta that she would be happy to be involved solely as a producer and not necessarily play the role of Barbie. However, Greta insisted on writing a special part for her, and Margot was thrilled with the character she got.

When it came to casting the male lead, Margot envisioned Ryan Gosling as the perfect fit to play the stereotypical Ken to her Barbie. In the script, it explicitly mentioned “Barbie, Margot and Ken, Ryan Gosling.” They were determined to make this pairing happen and wouldn’t take no for an answer.

Even though Margot and Ryan had a good relationship before, Margot was confident that their collaboration in the movie would be a success, and indeed it turned out to be just that.

Earlier, Greta Gerwig had revealed that she was impressed by Ryan Gosling’s comedic talent on Saturday Night Live (SNL) and believed he would be a great fit for the character of Ken. Ryan’s name was present throughout the script from the beginning, even though Greta had never met him. It was surprising to her when the studio assumed they already had a personal connection.
