Tanya Sue Chutkan (born July 5, 1962) is a Jamaican-born American lawyer and jurist serving as a United States district judge for the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. She was nominated to the court by President Barack Obama on January 6, 2014, and confirmed by the United States Senate by a vote of 95–0 on June 4, 2014.

Chutkan was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and immigrated to the United States with her family when she was 13 years old. She graduated from George Washington University in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1986 with a Juris Doctor degree.

After law school, Chutkan clerked for Judge Thomas F. Hogan of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. She then worked as an associate at the law firm of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr from 1987 to 1991. In 1991, she joined the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia, where she served as a staff attorney until 2002.

In 2002, Chutkan was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia. She served in that position until 2006, when she was appointed by President Bush to serve as a United States Magistrate Judge for the District of Columbia.

In December 2017, Tanya provided relief to two more pregnant minors who were seeking access to abortion while in ORR detention. In March 2018, she authorized a class action and required ORR to make abortion accessible to all minors they were responsible for.

On June 8, 2018, Chutkan prevented the release of a Saudi-American citizen who was accused of joining ISIL in Syria. The man remained detained in Iraq for nine months. The U.S. military had planned to release him the following day with supplies and money.

March 7, 2019, saw Judge Chutkan’s ruling finding Betsy DeVos, the U.S. Secretary of Education, in violation of the law for delaying the implementation of regulations addressing racial disparities, particularly in education eligibility and disciplinary methods.
