She was nominated to the court by President Barack Obama on January 6, 2014, and confirmed by the United States Senate by a vote of 95–0 on June 4, 2014.
Chutkan was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and immigrated to the United States with her family when she was 13 years old. She graduated from George Washington University in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1986 with a Juris Doctor degree.
After law school, Chutkan clerked for Judge Thomas F. Hogan of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. She then worked as an associate at the law firm of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr from 1987 to 1991. In 1991, she joined the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia, where she served as a staff attorney until 2002.
