Tanya S.Chutkan Career

President Obama chose Chutkan to become a judge for the US District Court in 2013. Her appointment got the green light from the Senate Judiciary Committee and other representatives. The council and Senate also accepted her nomination. On June 5, 2014, she officially took on her role as a judge.

In 2017, Judge Chutkan presided over a case involving a scam. She summoned the Office of Refugee Resettlement to allow a young girl under their care to have an abortion. The D.C. Circuit initially supported her decision, but the United States Supreme Court later made the issue irrelevant. In December 2017, Tanya provided relief to two more pregnant minors who were seeking access to abortion while in ORR detention. In March 2018, she authorized a class action and required ORR to make abortion accessible to all minors they were responsible for.

On June 8, 2018, Chutkan prevented the release of a Saudi-American citizen who was accused of joining ISIL in Syria. The man remained detained in Iraq for nine months. The U.S. military had planned to release him the following day with supplies and money.

March 7, 2019, saw Judge Chutkan’s ruling finding Betsy DeVos, the U.S. Secretary of Education, in violation of the law for delaying the implementation of regulations addressing racial disparities, particularly in education eligibility and disciplinary methods. The ruling also noted that the Education Department didn’t provide a valid reason for the delay and didn’t consider the impact on children, parents, and the community.

Maria Butina received an 18-month jail sentence for acting as an undeclared representative of the Russian government. Later, a critic raised concerns about lethal injection procedures for federal inmates on death row through a request against the United States Department of Justice. This situation changed, leading to directions for 13 inmates.

Judge Chutkan turned down Donald Trump’s attempt to withhold records from the House Select Committee investigating the Capitol attack on November 9, 2021. Judge Chutkan has been stern in sentencing individuals connected to the attack, often giving sentences longer than what’s recommended. Currently, she is overseeing Donald Trump’s criminal trial related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, which ultimately led to the January 6th Capitol attack.
