Criminal activities

Gawli worked in Mumbai’s textile mills located in the central areas of Parel, Chinchpokli, Byculla and Cotton Green. In 1970, Gawli and his brother Kishore entered the Mumbai underworld. After this he joined the Byculla Company and started monitoring their illegal liquor business. This criminal gang operated between central Mumbai and Byculla under the leadership of Rama Naik and Babu Reshim.

From the 1970s to the 1980s, Gawli started engaging in activities such as raiding the textile mill industry in Mumbai to make quick money by collecting hafta. In 1984, Rama Naik helped Dawood Ibrahim kill his rival Samad Khan. From 1984 to 1988, the Byculla Company supported all the criminal activities of Dawood.

To avoid arrest by the police, Dawood had secretly settled in Dubai but his crime business continued in Mumbai. In 1988, there was a dispute between Rama Naik and Sharad Shetty over a land deal, in which Dawood supported Shetty. Because of this Rama Naik got angry and insulted Dawood. However, after the death of Rama Naik in a police encounter in 1998, Gawli took over the criminal gang and started operating it from his home.

A fierce battle later broke out between Gawli’s gang and Dawood Ibrahim’s D-Company gang, as Gawli believed that Naik was killed at Dawood’s behest. Later many goons of Dawood’s D-Company like Sharad Shetty, Chhota Rajan and Sunil Sawant had to leave Mumbai and go to Dubai fearing Gawli’s gang. Arun Gawli handled the gang on the basis of Dagdi Chawal, on which the Mumbai Police raided several times and exposed this underworld Gawli gang.

Gawli was arrested several times for his criminal activities and detained several times during interrogation. Although in most of the cases, he used to survive even if the crime was not proved, because no one was ready to testify against him due to fear of him. In August 2012, the court convicted Gawli for the murder of Shiv Sena leader Kamlakar Jamshedkar. About 15 cases were registered against Gawli from 1986 to 2005, but the police have not been able to prove any crime till now.

Political career

In the 1980s, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray criticized the Mumbai police when the police took action against goons like Arun Gawli and Sai Banod. This was an indication that Gawli enjoyed political patronage, although Gawli had parted ways with the Shiv Sena in the mid-1990s. After this he killed many people of Shiv Sena and later formed his own separate party. Gawli is the founder of the All India Army Political Party, a party in Maharashtra.

In 2004, Gawli contested from the Chinchpokli Legislative Assembly constituency and was elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly as an All India Sena candidate. Gawli’s reputation grew rapidly thereafter, he is believed to have distinguished himself as a non-Marathi speaking leader by sticking to his native roots. Gawli suffered a major setback in politics when his nephew Sachin Ahir, who was also an All India Party MLA, openly turned against him and joined Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party. Sachin Ahir later contested the Lok Sabha elections against Gawli on a Nationalist Congress Party ticket. Both Sachin and Gawli were defeated in this election.
