If solar panels are producing more electricity than what is being consumed, the excess power can be supplied to the power grid using an On Grid Solar System.
Advantages of On Grid Solar System:

Disadvantages of On Grid Solar System:
- It doesn’t work when there is a power outage. If the power supply from the grid is cut off, the system won’t function.
2. Off Grid Solar System
The Off Grid Solar System is extensively used in areas where there is no access to the power grid. It is slightly more expensive than the On Grid Solar System because it utilizes batteries.
With the Off Grid Solar System, all the household appliances operate on solar panel-generated electricity during the day, and the excess power charges the batteries. When the Off Grid System stops generating electricity in the evening, the household appliances switch to the power grid supply.
Advantages of Off Grid Solar System:
- Provides uninterrupted power supply when there is an outage.
- Allows for 24-hour power usage in areas without grid electricity.
Disadvantages of Off Grid Solar System:
- It is costlier since it requires batteries, which need periodic replacement. Good quality batteries generally last for around 5 years. Battery life also depends on usage.
3. Hybrid Solar System
The Hybrid Solar System is the most advanced and expensive solar system available in the market. It combines features of both On Grid and Off Grid systems.
With a Hybrid Solar System, household appliances run on solar panel-generated electricity during the day. The excess power charges the batteries, and once the batteries are fully charged, the surplus electricity is sent to the power grid.
The electricity supplied to the power grid is measured by a net meter, which shows how much electricity we have provided to the grid.
Advantages of Hybrid Solar System:
- Allows us to operate household appliances using solar panels, batteries, or power grid supply.
- Helps reduce electricity bills significantly.
- Can supply electricity to the power grid, similar to an Off Grid Solar System.
Disadvantages of Hybrid Solar System:
- It is more expensive compared to other solar systems.
- The maintenance cost of batteries is an additional expense.
- Installation may be slightly more challenging than traditional Solar Panel installation.
