Diana Taurasi Career

After finishing her time at university, Taurasi was chosen as the top pick by the Phoenix Mercury in 2004. Despite her team having a bad season the previous year, Taurasi made a strong start by scoring 22 points in her first game and averaging 17 points throughout the season. Even though her team didn’t make it to the playoffs, Taurasi was recognized as an All-Star player and received the Rookie of the Year award.

In the next season, she managed to score an average of 16 points per game despite dealing with an ankle injury. She was selected as an All-Star again, but her team still couldn’t make it to the playoffs. The following season brought new changes to the team, including a new coach and another talented rookie player, which raised hopes for the Mercury’s future performance.

In 2006, Taurasi had an outstanding season with the Mercury. Guided by Coach Westhead, she excelled on the court, leading the league in scoring and even setting a new record for the most points scored in a single season. Taurasi maintained an impressive average of around 25 points per game and also broke the WNBA record by making 121 three-pointers. Despite her individual achievements, the Mercury fell short of reaching the playoffs that year.

The turning point came in 2007 when the Mercury finally made it to the WNBA playoffs and went on to win the Finals against the Detroit Shock. They achieved another victory in 2009, and during that season, Taurasi was honored as the WNBA Finals MVP. Her remarkable accomplishment placed her among only two players who have ever secured a season-scoring championship, the season MVP award, the WNBA Championship, and the finals MVP title all in the same season.

Despite facing occasional injuries, Diana Taurasi had a successful career. In 2012, she could only play 8 matches due to several injuries and had to sit out the rest of the season. However, she made a strong comeback in 2013 and led her team to the playoffs. In May 2017, she signed a contract extension with the Mercury and became the first player in the league’s history to achieve impressive milestones of 7,000 points, 1,500 rebounds, and 1,500 assists. Later in the same year, in June, she became the all-time leading scorer in the history of the WNBA.
